A perfectly preserved example of classic Omani architecture, Nizwa Fort proudly looks out over the city and remains of the oldest of structures its kind in the country. Constructed above an underground stream in the mid-17th century, the fort is known for its monumental drum tower, soaring 30 m (98.4 ft) up into the sky and studded with lookout and firing points. Long the seat of power for the ruling imams, the fort also served as an intimidating stronghold during various conflicts.
